Citing and Referencing (APA): Guides for using the tools in Word

Using the tools in Word to create citations and a bibliography

This guide has been written to support you in using the tools in Word to create your bibliography. It is equally applicable to Mac and PC users, but unfortunately Word for iPad (including the iPad Pro) does not support this feature. If you are restricted to using an iPad Pro, please contact Mrs Breag who will try to assist you.

If you do not have Word on your computer, you can download it for free using the school educational license. Please check the guidance using the link at the bottom of the Oakham Start page.

NOTICE FOR MAC USERS

Important notice for Mac users using Safari:
If you are having any problems accessing the embedded videos, this is probably because you have "Prevent cross-site tracking" switched on, which is the default option in Safari. You have two choices. You can either turn this setting off and refresh your browser screen, at which point the videos should allow you to sign in and should work, or you can use a different browser.
There are instructions below for turning off "Prevent cross-site tracking" in Safari. If you want to use a different browser, I use Firefox (available free here), but there are many other choices available.

Inserting citations

NOTE: while both Mac and PC users can all access the citing and referencing tools in Word, they are not available in Word for the iPad (including the iPad Pro).

How to insert citations and create a bibliography using the tools in Word

This video was originally made for English A-Level coursework, but the principles of citing and referencing using the tools in Word are universal.

  • For guidance on how to use these tools for particular kinds of sources (e.g. YouTube videos), check the other tabs on this guide.
  • Copies of printable guides to citing and referencing (for Mac and PC users) can be found to the right of this page.
  • If you would like to use an annotated bibliography in your Investigate stage, you can find one to the right of this page, along with an investigative journal.

Transferring citations between documents ("managing sources")

This video is for Windows PC users - if you usually use a Mac then please view the one on the other tab.

This video will show you how to copy your sources from one document to another (here an investigative journal to an essay). It was originally created for an IB EE Seminar, so has a few minor references to the IB EE LibGuide which you can ignore (e.g. you do not need to complete a Forms quiz when you have finished watching), but the process you need is exactly the same.

If you are having trouble viewing the embeded video, here is a direct link to the video in Stream.

Apologies for the minor dip in sound quality towards the end of the video caused by the fan on my computer starting up - my Mac is very old and recording video causes it to get very hot!

Annotated bibliography

This resource will help you to keep track of all the different sources you find. Once you start working with each source in more detail, you will also need a tool like the Investigative Journal to organise your notes.

Note that although this version was originally created for the IB EE, it is widely applicable across all subjects and courses, not just IB.

Investigative Journal

An excellent way to keep track of your investigation. Use one page per source and don't forget to insert a citation at the top of the page. If you choose not to use it, think about what you will use instead.

Note again that this resource is not IB specific.
