I have always had a great passion for reading and wherever I may be, I always try to find something to read as I believe that literature enriches my life in profound ways. It enhances my understanding of the world by immersing me in diverse perspectives and experiences. I enjoy romance novels in particular, as I feel like they resonate deeply with me, offering emotional depth and a sense of hope. My recent favourite is “Theatre” by Somerset Maugham.
I study Economics, Politics and Psychology and I love doing yoga and tennis for my sports. I am also involved with the creation of “Spoken” which I find very interesting and so reading allows me to relax and take my mind on an adventure after long productive days, making reading an indispensable part of my daily life!
I joined Oakham School last year and I’m studying the IB, doing Maths, Physics and German as my Higher Levels and English, Geography and History on Standard Level. I’m therefore mainly an academic kid but outside of that I also really enjoy music and playing the piano as well as sailing. I’ve loved books since the day I learned to read. My favourite genres are fantasy and dystopian since I really love the worldbuilding and just escaping into different worlds. I also really enjoy historical novels. Some of my all-time favourites are ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Percy Jackson’ but I’ve recently really gotten into YA-fantasy.
I am Varya and I am delighted to be one of your Reading Ambassadors this year. Reading and literature have been vital and enjoyable parts of my life since my early childhood. The passion has only grown throughout the years and now I am reading widely in my English and History A-Levels. However, I am convinced that reading extends far beyond the academic environment and is a wonderful way of relaxing, dreaming, exploring your personal interests and connecting with others. I am looking forward to collaborating and sharing my appreciation of literature with you, hopefully bringing reading closer to our community and daily lives.
I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, it started with curiosity— what happens next, who are these characters, why did they do that? Over time it became something deeper, something that taught me to notice details and understand emotions, opinions, and ideas. I’m drawn to books that feel real, that talk about things that matter, tell thought-provoking stories, where every character has layers. My favourite genres is literary and historical fiction, romance, and mystery, I also enjoy some classics. Marina Stepnova’s Godless Lane is one of my favourite books, it shows how an ordinary life can be complex and fragile. That’s what I love about reading the most— it stays with me long after I close the book, shapes my opinions and the way I see the world.

" Jane Austen believed Emma to be 'a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like', but as Emma tries and fails to act as the matchmaker for various couples, it is hard not to fall in love with her too. I enjoyed it as the novel was a relatively straightforward read, but also had characters which make you invest yourself in the novel." - F6

I originally read it as a sceptic to the whole concept and was quickly converted into logical/practical ways of thinking - positive outlooks!" - F7
" A very compelling read, lots of thought behind each chapter. Written in a way that makes you think Evelyn Hugo is a real person. Shows what it means to be human; neither fully good nor fully bad. Shows the strive people should aim for to succeed. " -F7
