Welcome to EE Seminar 3. Please work your way through all the video guides (choosing Mac or PC as appropriate for the IT Workshop) before you begin writing your essay. This should take about 50 minutes to an hour. We advise pausing the IT workshop videos to allow you to work through the instructions for setting up your EE document as you watch.
We recommend that you watch the videos expanded to full screen where possible. If prompted to log in to access a video, use your Oakham School email address and password.
Once you have finished the videos, you are all expected to complete and submit the very short quiz at the end to confirm that you have completed the sessions. You are expected to watch the videos and complete the quiz on Monday morning, even if you are not ready to start writing your essay (for example, if your essay involves practical work and you have not yet finished collecting your data). We will be checking that you have completed this step and following up to make sure that there are no issues if you do not.
If you have technical problems accessing any of the resources on this page, please contact Mrs Toerien (JAT)
Writing your IB Extended Essay
In this video Mr Foster introduces you to the process of academic writing and the formal requirements of the EE. You can find all the resources discussed in this video on the Expressing your ideas tab of this guide.
[Note: there is a minor error in this video because Mrs Toerien had put the Contents and Acknowledgements sections the wrong way around on two of the graphics. This has been corrected on the current version of the Expressing your ideas tab. The Acknowledgements should come between the Title page and the Contents.]
Constructing your understanding from your research
Before you can start to write, it is vital to have an idea what you intend to say. By now you should have largely completed your investigation stage and be starting to pull all your ideas together. In this video Mrs Toerien will help you to understand how to use the tools we have provided to do that.
This video deals with two different resources which may be useful to different groups of students:
Have you put your Research Question into ManageBac? If you haven't (or if it has changed), please do that this morning. It is very important that we know who is on track and has a suitable Research Question. If it does change slightly during the writing process, you can always edit it.
Setting up your EE document on a Mac
If you follow the instructions in this video, pausing where necessary, your document will be set up according to the IB formatting requirements, ready to start writing your essay by the time you have finished.
[Apologies for the poor sound quality towards the end of the video - this is due to the computer's internal fan starting up as it gets hot. My Mac is very old! - Mrs Toerien]
Managing your sources on a Mac
This video shows you how to move all the bibliographic information from your Investigative Journal into your essay, without needing to retype anything (if you cited your sources properly in your Investigative Journal in the first place).

You are expected to complete this short quiz on Monday before you start writing your essay. This is necessary because with the current remote access arrangements we need to be sure who is able to access the support on offer.
If you don't leave long comments this quiz can easily be completed in under a minute!
Please note that your name will be submitted to Mr Toerien and Mr Foster with your results, but this will only be used to verify who has completed the quiz and to provide additional support to check that everyone is getting the support they need. We always welcome honest feedback to help us to improve the support we offer.
****UPDATE: Monday 13.25. Forms seems to be working again. Please complete when convenient****
There will be optional drop-in support sessions in the IB Extended Essay Support Team with Mr Foster and Mrs Toerien at these times:
Monday 18th May:
Tuesday 19th May:
If you need support outside these times, please contact :
If your supervisor is currently on leave from school, then please contact their Head of Department for subject specific support (if you are unsure who that is, you can find out from the school website, here). Mr Russell and Mrs Lorenz-Weir are currently on leave, so please do not contact them. If you have contacted the Head of Department and still cannot find anyone to give you subject specific support, please email Mr Foster and Mrs Toerien (together) to make sure we are aware of your situation.
