The Virtual Smallbone Library: Searching for and reserving items on the Library Catalogue

A guide to accessing library services during school closure

The videos below will remind you how to search for the items you need on Heritage, our online catalogue, and how to reserve items for Click and Collect. Don't forget that once you have reserved your items you will also need to book a collection slot.

You can book a slot as soon as you have reserved one item, and you can continue to add reservations to your record (up to a maximum of 10) until 6pm on Sunday June 21st.

Searching the catalogue

Basic searching

This video shows you how to do a general search for an item on Heritage, our online catalogue, and explains what information the catalogue gives you about that item. It covers general searching, using links to authors, subjects and keywords and briefly touches on limiting your search to a particular section of the Library (e.g. talking books).

The main focus of this video is fiction items. If you are reasonably confident with general searching but want to be able to refine your search technique, and especially if you are looking for non-fiction items, you should watch the Advanced Searching video below this one.

You will need to log in using your school email address and password to view the video. If you have problems with the embedded video here is the direct link to the video in Stream. Mac users using Safari should check the notice to the right.

Advanced searching

This video shows you how to do an advanced search for an item on Heritage, our online catalogue. It is particularly (but not exclusively) focused on non-fiction items and covers:

  • Using * to stand for a number of unknown letters
  • Limiting a search to particular locations in the Library
  • Using the Boolean operators AND, OR and AND NOT
  • Using ? to stand for a single unknown letter

If you are uncertain about general searching on the catalogue, you should watch the Basic Catalogue Seaching video above first.

You will need to log in using your school email address and password to view the video. If you have problems with the embedded video here is the direct link to the video in Stream. Mac users using Safari should read the notice to the right.

Reserving items for Click and Collect

This video shows you how to reserve items for Click and Collect on Heritage, our online catalogue.

You may reserve up to 10 items for Click and Collect (regardless of how many you currently have on your account). Please make sure:

  • The item is "available" before you reserve it. We are not accepting returns at this time, so any items currently "on loan" will not be available for Click and Collect.
  • You are Reserver 1 on at least one of your items. Reserver 2 will only receive the item if there is more than one available copy (which you can see from the catalogue) or Reserver 1 cancels their reservation before 6pm on Sunday 21st June.
  • You book a Click and Collect time before 6pm on Sunday June 21st to collect your items (on the Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoons of the following week).
  • If someone else is collecting your books for you, or if you are collecting them for someone else, the account holder emails Mrs Breag with a statement along the lines of  "I agree that x may collect the Click and Collect Library books issued on my account on my behalf".

You will need to log in using your school email address and password to view the video. If you have any problems with the embedded version use this link to the original in Stream. If you are using Safari on a Mac, read the notice to the right.

Notice for Mac users

Important notice for Mac users using Safari:
If you are having any problems accessing the embedded videos, this is probably because you have "Prevent cross-site tracking" switched on, which is the default option in Safari. You have two choices. You can either turn this setting off and refresh your browser screen (at which point the videos should allow you to sign in and should work) or you can use a different browser.
There are instructions below for turning off "Prevent cross-site tracking" in Safari. If you want to use a different browser, I use Firefox (available free here), but there are many other choices available.

Normal term-time Library opening hours:
Mon-Fri: 08:30-21:15
Sat: 08:00-16:00
